Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
Q. Can I enter my trip mileage manually?
A. Absolutely! Just create a new trip using the “Manual” option, then tap on the 0.0 miles readout at the top of your screen. You will see a simple number pad for manually entering your miles. Address information is not required.
Q. Can I manually adjust the mileage for Automatic trips?
A. Yes! When creating a new trip in automatic mode, simply tap on the miles readout at the top of your screen. You can then adjust the mileage amount manually. When editing an existing trip, just click the “Edit” button in the upper right corner and follow the same process. This is a great way to adjust the trip distance for greater accuracy.
Q. Can I answer calls, listen to music, and use other apps?
A. Yes! Tap2Track Mileage does not need to be “open” to work. We capture your start and stop location, then measure the distance. This means you can close the app once you start a trip, with no loss of data. Simply re-open the app when you arrive at your next location to record the stop location.
Q. What if I forget to record a trip, or a Start/Stop location?
A. No problem. Tap2Track Mileage allows you to recreate a past trip by entering the start and stop addresses, or manually entering the mileage. If its a common trip, you can simply click “Copy Recent” to re-create your trip.
Q. How does Tap2Track Mileage estimate my mileage?
A. Tap2Track captures your start and stop locations, finds the nearest addresses, then automatically calculates the miles between these two addresses. Tap2Track Mileage uses information from Google Maps to estimate distance as driven by a car.
Q. How accurate are Tap2Track Mileage’s distance estimates?
A. Tap2Track Mileage uses data from Google Maps and your iPhone, so your mileage data is as accurate as possible. Tap2Track Mileage uses the “fastest route” between two addresses as the basis for your trip mileage. You’re free to “fine tune” this value if you want more accuracy.
Q. How accurate are Tap2Track Mileage’s addresses?
A. Tap2Track Mileage uses the location services built into your iPhone, then tries to locate the nearest address. The address found is as close by as possible, but might not be exact if your signal strength is weak. Don’t worry, though: you can always edit each specific address if you need exact address data.
Q. Does Tap2Track work on my 1G iPhone?
A. Yes. Although location information might not be as accurate as iPhones with GPS, Tap2Track will still use cell-tower triangulation or WiFi to estimate your location. You can also enter addresses manually for exact mileage estimates.
Q. Will Tap2Track work on my iPod Touch?
A. Yes. Although location information might not be as accurate as with iPhones, Tap2Track will use WiFi triangulation to estimate your location. You can also enter addresses manually for exact mileage estimates.
Q. How does Tap2Track estimate my odometer?
A. Tap2Track Mileage estimates odometer readings for you, based on total miles driven for the year. Enter your first odometer reading and estimated end reading, and Tap2Track Mileage automatically does the math for all trips.
Q. What about odometer readings – aren’t they required by the IRS?
A. Yes, the IRS requires odometer readings. The good news is that we automatically estimate your odometer readings for you each time you send your data via email. This way, your mileage log is always up to date.
Q. What information is required to be in my mileage log by the IRS?
A. The IRS requires several specific data points to be documented in your mileage log. For each vehicle you must record the odometer reading for the first day (January 1) and last day (December 31) of the year, as well as the total miles for the year. For each trip you wish to deduct, you must record:
• The date of the trip
• The purpose for the trip, and
• Start and stop odometer reading for the trip
